Research
TRT has been active in the international market since its foundation. It was early involved in services and research projects on behalf of the European Commission. The expertise gained participating in European project teams since the 6th Framework Programme has lead to activate an intense and solid co-operation with research institutes, universities, private companies in several European countries. TRT has been part of a number of consortia engaged into the development of policy assessment methodologies, future scenarios, modelling transport and strategic impacts assessment tools.
The main areas where the research activities of TRT are specialised concern transport policy, transport models, economic assessment, freight logistics as well as the linkages between the transport sector, the energy issue and the technological development.
TRT is co-operating with many Directorates General of the
European Commission and Joint Research Centres, the European
Parliament and is actually involved in several research projects, of
which in several cases is also leading partner.

iTREN-2030 - Integrated Transport and Energy baseline until 2030
iTREN-2030 strategic objective is to integrate the analysis of
technology, transport, energy, environment and economic
developments on the grounds of a consistent baseline until 2030 by
combining state-of-theart models in these fields. Specific
objectives of iTREN-2030 comprise:
1. To draw a consistent, quantitative baseline for technology,
transport, energy, environment and economic trends.
2. To compare this baseline to past experiences.
3. To demonstrate the applicability of the combined models to test
and forecast a variety of policies to fulfil the user needs of
policy makers in the transport and energy fields.

REFIT - Refinement and test of sustainability indicators and tools with regard
to European transport policies
REFIT is a project, co-funded by the European Commission within
the Sixth Framework Programme, that tried to address these
weaknesses. REFIT aimed to develop, test and validate a “modelling
tools-based” methodology that, through the analysis of selected
indicators, enables ex-ante evaluation of the European Common
Transport Policy considering the economic, environmental and
social dimensions of sustainability.

INTERCONNECT project
INTERCONNECT is co-funded by the European Commission, Seventh Framework
Programme, Theme 7 Transport. INTERCONNECT is concerned with the role of
local and regional interconnections in the context of the growing
importance of long-distance passenger journeys in Europe. Effective
interconnection between trip legs is a necessary feature of a significant
proportion of passenger journeys, particularly those journeys which
contribute most to regional and national economies. Poor interconnectivity
among different transport networks may compromise the objectives of
integration of the TEN-T network investments and policy measures.
Effective interconnection requires the provision of integrated networks
and services which are attractive to potential users and this is likely to
require cooperation among a range of transport authorities and service
providers in the public and private sectors.
